Central Islip Hosts 2026 Memorial Day Ceremonies

The Central Islip School District and community came together at Alfano Elementary School for its annual Memorial Day ceremonies to recognize the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for all Americans across the country.

The ceremonies began with welcoming remarks from Ms. Debra Cavanagh, Board of Education trustee, before Dr. Sharon A. Dungee, Superintendent of Schools, took over as Master of Ceremonies.

Dr. Dungee thanked all in attendance and invited Reverend Wayne K. Redman of First United Methodist Church in Central Islip to deliver the convocation.

Linda Vavricka, Islip Town Clerk, and Councilman Jorge Guadron presented proclamations from Senator Monica Martinez and Suffolk County Legislator Trish Bergin to Claude Byer, Captain in the U.S. Air Force and Grand Marshal.

Katelyn Reyes, a senior at Central Islip High School and drum major, offered remarks about what Memorial Day means to her and how we should continue to honor those who fight for freedom every day.

Wreaths were presented in recognition of the Civil War by Rick Johnson, U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant and CIFD Board of Fire Commissioners Chairman, and Robert Miller of the CIFD Board of Fire Commissioners; the Spanish-American War by retired SRO Police Officer Tracy Mathis and Suffolk County Police Officer Justin Fernandez; World War I by Lance Johnson, U.S. Air Force veteran, and Cornella Re’nee Brewington-Johnson, former U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps Captain; World War II by William Dungee, U.S. Navy Seabee and Petty Officer Second Class, and Chuck Doyle of the CIFD Board of Commissioners; Korean War by Robert Sutton of the Board of Fire Commissioners and Dennis Solares of CIFD; Vietnam War by Joseph Vereline, CIFD Fire Chief, and Joseph Correia of the CIFD Board of Fire Commissioners; Desert Storm by representatives of Central Ambulance Islip/Hauppauge, First Assistance Chief Alexandra Vitale, and Second Assistance Chief Emily Munar; Iraqi Freedom by Central Ambulance Islip/Hauppauge, 3rd Assistant Chief Vincent Hartmann, and Captain Alexis Pisano; 9/11 by Suffolk County Police Inspector Michael Kelly and retired Captain Tom Kelly; and Victims of Terrorism and Other Conflicts by School Board President Luis Alcantara and Library Board Chair Eileen Santangelo.

Following the wreaths, Charlie and Patrick Murphy from CIFD participated in the commemorative roll call and bell ringing for Central Islip community members who gave their lives in the armed forces.

To conclude the ceremonies, drum major and senior Davian Perez performed Taps on his trumpet.
